The last few days I've watched a bit of the NCAA tourney and I've been reading Richard Rohr's Simplicity...
I don’t think friendly competition is a bad thing, but I’m not so sure our culture’s sense of competition is so friendly anymore. Success in sports at any level is about gaining an edge on your opponent or even your own teammates. As kids, much of our competitive attitude was shaped by our favorite professional athletes who we tried our best to imitate, without recognizing that one of the primary factors influencing their attitude and personality was loads and loads of money.
It’d be fine if we could leave all our competitiveness on the playing field but the problem is that the boundary lines of where the game stops and the reality of life begins are typically so ambiguous that in order to stay competitive it’s necessary to maintain your competitive spirit at all times.
Scriptures seem to indicate that a competitive spirit and the holy spirit can’t coincide. Maybe our soul really only has room for one or the other.
